In 2017, I wrote a fictional short story about a male porn star. The name of the male porn star was Tripp Towers, and the title of the short story was “Spike.” Over the next three years, I read the story at various literary readings and attempted to get the story published in various literary magazines. But no one would publish it. In 2019, I wrote a blog post in which I shared some of what would turn out to be fourteen rejections. It “isn’t a match for us,” they read. It “isn’t quite right for us,” they explained. “It is clear you are a talented writer, and your story stood out from the group,” they informed me. “However, we receive so many submissions that, in the end, we have to reject a lot of excellent pieces.” For some reason, I kept on trying to get the story published. Finally, in 2020, something like a miracle happened. An online magazine called Bending Genres wanted to publish it. In any case, you can read “Spike” here. The story begins:
“Tripp Towers, male porn star, sat on the bench, his penis in his hand.”
