This place Gold Diggers used to be a strip club back in the day. In 2014, Time Out called it “the most honest strip club in all of Los Angeles.” Now it’s a hipster bar-hotel-recording studio thing. Why does everything good have to die? I don’t know.
Two-tenths of a mile away is Secrets of Hollywood, which is a sex shop that has been around forever. You might remember it as the adult video store where Max California (Joaquin Phoenix) worked in the Nicolas Cage movie-about-a-snuff-movie “8MM.”
I took the photo on the left of the Sunset Theatre over 20 years ago. The other day, I took the photo on the right of where that X-rated movie theater used to be. Now it’s a parking lot. Like Robert Frost wrote: “Nothing gold can stay.”

Oh shit Gold Diggers on Santa Monica blvd. I was 9 years old (1997) when me and my cousin were getting haircuts at a salon just a few doors down, and while he was getting his cut i was bored and stepped outside to kill time. I walked right in here and saw a topless woman. I got yelled at and told to get out. That might've been the first or second time i saw a topless woman that year. I spent the first third of my life in hollywood.
Thanks for the great memories!
